Sports betting is about to take a front seat here in California. Nobody is talking about proposition 26 or 27 right now, but you will hear a ton about what these two things offer in the coming weeks and months ahead of the November election.
Two primary sports betting initiatives on the November ballot. Proposition 26 would restrict betting to in-person only at tribal casinos and for different horse racing tracks. Proposition 27 would allow online sports betting outside of Tribal lands for example on cell phones or computers. They are both trying to make sports betting legal in California. It is all about the location, geography, and the how of sports betting, basically, the how and where.
Online sports betting Major League Baseball supports Proposition 27, the "California solutions to homeless and Mental Health Act." A coalition of sports book operators back it. It includes Draft Kings and FanDuel. A percentage of the revenue from prop 27 would be dedicated to fighting the homeless crisis in California.Prop 27 claims to help fight homelessness by funding mental health and drug programs and building more homes for the homeless community.
These regulations will not stop people from gambling illegally. People are already doing these things; it now just makes it legal and provides the avenues to do it.
Proposition 26, the "California sports wagering regulation and unlawful gaming enforcement act," is supported by a coalition of tribes led by Pechanga and labor leaders, who all strongly oppose prop 27.
Honestly, it is all one big gamble in the long run. Which one of these props is going to help? You do not know whom to trust. Before you vote, make sure you do your research.
